Ambassadors of Morocco

Ambassadors of Rock!

Quick Fire Interview with Ben Phillips from Ambassadors of Morocco

High flying London quartet Ambassadors of Morocco have already established themselves a cult following on London's fickle underground scene and 2010 could be the year they really explode. Their superb balance of whistful vocals, layered melodies, hook laden riffs and a great rhythm section should bring them their place in the mainstream sooner rather than later.

How did you all meet?

We all met in Marakesh while backpacking around Morocco, we were staying at the same hostel and just got chatting about music and discovered that we were all musicians who were interested in the same thing.

What do you think of the mp3 generation and the de-monopolising of the record companies?

I think its had both a positive and negative affect on music. Mp3s and file sharing have allowed music to reach a greater auidence, when iI was a kid if you heard a track you liked and it hadn't been released as a single you would have to go and buy the album, and nine times out of ten you would soon realise that the track you liked was much better than anything else on that album. Nowadays with Itunes and other online sites you can buy separate tracks from an album which makes a big difference, I dont think the younger generation really listen to an album in its entirety anymore, so its changing the way bands and artists approach recording albums. For me the main benefit is that bands and artists are not making much money from records sales anymore and most of there income is from live performance, I think this is a great thing, these days anyone can sound good in the studio but in a live performance there's nowhere to hide, I think this will really seperate all the manufactured bands and fakers from the real musicians who have honed there craft. We as a band pride ourselves on our live performance, I believe that when you go and see a band they should really put on a show, not just stand there and play some of there songs to you.

What is your favourite song and why?

It's got to be move on up by Curtis Mayfield, its such an uplifting and inspiring song yet it consists of three minor chords, its a great example of a songwriter at the top of his game, genius!

What stories are there behind your song lyrics?

Well when we wrote one of our songs 'Wikipedia' Beni and i were working together in an office in kings x, the song is based on our experiences working there, its about the monotony of day to day life, having a job that you hate, wishing you were somewhere else living it up, something most people can relate to.

What was the last album you bought or downloaded?

Boxer by the National, a fantastic album, so different to anything around at the moment, the whole album has a real atmosphere to it, which is something that is so hard to produce in a studio environment.

Favourite place to gig or go out in London?

We all loved the Metro Club on Oxford Street (London), sadly it closed down due to the crossrail project, we played alot of gigs there and every time we played we had an amazing time, the atmosphere was always electric, good times all round, we like to think of it as our spiritual home!

Any unusual hobbies, tattoo's or anything about you all that no-one knows?

I'm a bit of a secret Star Wars fanatic, the best films ever made, I can watch all the those films time and time again and never get bored, I've got a lightsaber and everything!

Do you ever play jokes on each other?

Well i take the p*ss out of Beni a lot just because its easy, he never really fights back, maybe one day he'll lose it and iron me out.

Do any of you ever show off with cheesy songs at a Karaoke related bar/party/event?

I don't like singing, but I like watching other people mess it up!

Would you rather be popular and on the TV or underground with a big live following (obviously both would be good)

Definitely prefer to be underground, I don't care about being famous, as long as I can make a decent living from music for the rest of my life I'd be really happy, I think having too much money seems to ruin people, especially musicians.

Other hidden talents?

Im ambidextrous, does that count?

Plans for the future?

The next step for us is a single release, were aiming for an early 2010 release, we're going into the studio next month to record two singles back to back, we are also looking to get support slots with bigger bands that are touring in order to raise our profile and grow our fan base.
