Speakers Corner: The LF Forum > tinker, Tailor Soldier, Spy - ending?

Can some one clarify the ending of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy? Why did he shoot the dude?

a) cos he was a betrayed lover?
b) or cos he was also a double agent?

I'm thinking a).

I can say definitely (a). There is that look between two of the players that really lingers a little bit and raises a Roger Moore eyebrow. In terms of (b) less so, but I don’t entirely count it out. I think the Mole planned for him to get back home because of (a). But I think your (b) theory works perfectly for the whole film. There are a lot of layers in the film. Control suspects everyone. No one is beyond (above…whatever) suspicion. This is a story where at everyone is forced to bluff, wear a mask, act duplicitous, find the weaknesses in the human heart. The Christmas party is hilarious when they all start singing in Russian. I mean I thought everyone was a double. Paranoia alert: I’ve got to add ©.

©Now if I’d been sent on a bent mission, brutally tortured, my career flushed down the drain and my mind along with it …and if I found out who was responsible and I was pretty good with a gun…well...

But wait…

When those guys look at each other… I mean it’s not only love. An understanding is reached. At that moment they both understand what one of them is, and that he is proud of it (being a Mole). So then, why then, arhhh, but then…a + b + c = d

D = I need to watch it again.
