Tommy Tiernan Interview

By Dan Collacott

It is with great sadness that I present the final chapter in my summer trilogy of comedy interviews, but what better way to end things than with the irrepressible genius of Irish comic Tommy Tiernan. The stand up legend proving once again that even when met with a barrage of stupid/serious questions - he can still turn any interview into all out laugh fest!

Tommy will be touring the UK and starring alongside Eddied Izzard and Ross Noble at Laughs in the Park 2011, he needs no further introduction so ladies and gentleman I give you the Tommy Tiernan interview!

What are you up to at this very moment?

I’m listening to my wife.

You are co-headlining Laughs in the Park 2011 - how did you get involved in that?

There were lots of secret meetings following an initial approach by Russian gangsters and horsey people.

Can you tell us about your upcoming UK tour - any themes/subjects you'll be focusing on?

I can’t tell you anything about it because I’ve taken out a super-injunction against myself, I don’t always have my best interests at heart.

Will you be warming up for the tour by previewing material at Laughs in the Park?

I’m there primarily to steal ideas from Eddie and Ross.

Do you think comedy is the new rock and roll?

No, it’s the old bowling.

What is the best or worst heckle you've ever received?

This is the 419th time I’ve been asked this question and I still haven’t thought of an answer.

Your comedy can be both challenging and controversial are there any places/taboos you wouldn't touch on in your act?

I wouldn’t touch Uranium.

Comedy is often seen as an unrefined expression of chaos, do you agree with that statement?

Arse midget fish-face grasshopper bluebottle nihilism.

Where do you enjoy touring the most?

Africa, no one knows me so all the gigs get cancelled.

Do you think that the notion of celebrity in comedy is disproportionate to actual talent nowadays?

I don’t think I feel as strongly about it as you do.

What are your career highlights and lowlights so far?

Career is the word they use when a car goes flying off the road into a field. So highlights would have to be, landing on grass and missing the badger. Lowlights would have to be spilling my soup.

What would you be if you weren't a comedian?

Broke.

Would you ever do more TV work or go down the sitcom route?

I’d like to star in a sitcom remake of the World Snooker Championships with Alex Higgins as Leonard Rossiter and myself as Mrs. Slocum.
